Managers are making us more stressed in recession, say staff
Inadequate managers are making matters worse for employees who are stressed because of the recession, according to a survey by Investors in People.
In a survey of 2,261 UK workers, 43 per cent said a lack of confidence in the managers was aggravating their worries in the recession.
Almost two-fifths – 38 per cent – of employees in the IIP report were more stressed than a year ago but only 29 per cent said their employer was doing anything to help them manage it.
Only 5 per cent of workers said they were receiving more support from their managers since before the downturn.
Simon Jones, IIP chief executive, said increased stress would have a negative impact on productivity. “The longer the problem is ignored, the more it could affect productivity at a time when the UK economy needs a boost.
“We would urge managers to respond proactively to the recession, to gain the confidence of their employees by providing support for them during this period of uncertainty.”
Older employees were found to be coping best with the recession, with those aged over 55 who had mostly experienced previous downturns feeling less stressed than their younger colleagues.
