December 11, 2008 Mumbai: After long days of discussions with Industry bodies, the government of India has decided to give autonomy to the 20 new IITs, which will be set up soon in India. "The government will have the right to question their functioning if need be," said a senior government official.
The government will soon place the blueprint for IITs to be set up under Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode before the Cabinet for approval. Moreover, IT industry body Nasscom has prepared a detailed project report on how these institutes would be established and function.
Official discussions have also been made on DPR with representatives from various stake holders, including industry bodies like FICCI, who were in favor of granting complete autonomy to new IITes.
On concerns over audit to be conducted by Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), analyst said, "It was sorted out. In fact, there is no difference between audit done by chartered accountants and the CAG. Government rules and regulations are followed in any case."
