Survey reveals jobseekers change accents to beat competition
23/01/2009:Many jobseekers will change their accent for a job interview because they think it will make them more successful, results of a new survey have shown.
Recruiter has reported on research conducted by Bury Technologies, which found the Queen`s English to be the accent many people think will put them ahead of the competition.
Furthermore, 16 per cent said they had changed their accent to help them secure a position, while 83 per cent made theirs less pronounced or more neutral.
A Scottish or Home countries accent was found to be the second most popular.
Julie Morrison, a consultant at Search who has a Scottish accent, said: "It is appealing because it is non-obtrusive or aggressive. From a sales or customer services aspect, I think the accent is appealing. I am quite happy with my accent."
As well as speaking clearly and concisely in interviews, candidates should also ensure that they have a quality CV, especially during the current recession, Interviewgold.com claims.
