Now, placement agencies under MEA scanner
Placement agencies in India sending people to various countries on job and studies front will come under the scanner of ministry of external affairs.
Taking a serious note on the attack on Indian student in Australia on Monday, ministry’s spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said placement agencies need to be checked. “There are good and not-so-good agencies. The question is about the not-so-good ones,” Prakash said.
A 22-year-old Sikh student was attacked in Australia on Monday. He was dragged by his turban when he was sitting in a bus station.
“While the recent attack on Indian students has been taken up at the highest level, today’s incident should be viewed as serious,” Prakash said. “Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and external affairs minister S M Krishna have discussed the issue with their Australian counterparts. It’s following the zero-tolerance policy and has taken number of steps to control the attack on Indians there,” he added.
After issuing guidelines for students intending to study in Australia, the Australian government has beefed up security and a mechanism of interaction with Indian students has started.
“Of the 1.4 million Indians living in Australia, close to 90,000 are students. The government there is expected to review educational institutions,” he said.
