Need for Goal Setting

Think of all the famous personalities you know who achieved greatness during their lifetime -- the first person to walk on the moon, or to scale Mount Everest. These people could not have achieved success, without proper goal setting. To reach a particular destination, or achieve a targeted objective, one needs to make smaller achievable goals that are synchronized with the overall plan. The road to success has many stepping stones. Each such stepping stone is a goal towards the objective. Goals reduce and control chaos in decision making process. Goals act as rudders that give direction to the action plan.

Goals are intrinsic to every human being. Without goals, we cannot progress. Organizational goals reflect the ambitions of the promoters of the company. Goals are tasks that we desire to achieve within a reasonable period of time. Sometimes, the goals are tangible, for instance, meeting sales targets for a particular month or year. Sometimes, the goals are intangible, such as, for instance, being popular. Goal setting is an organized method of accomplishing goals with a reasonable time period.

Bite-sized goals help achieve bigger objectives. When goals are too lofty, the end-objective seems unachievable. However if goals are realistic and reasonable, then they can add fuel to the fire.

Although everybody understands the need for goal setting instinctively, we often find that people go about trying to meet targets without any planning. A good example is that of people who follow various kinds of crash diets, surgical mechanisms and sometimes pure starvation methods in order to lose weight.

Personal Goal Setting
Goal setting is important not just for organizations, but also for individuals. Personal goal setting allows individuals to realistically examine and structure their goals, to make it ambitious, yet attainable. If goals are set without any consideration for practical limitations, then even the most realistic goal can become a distant dream. However, by using personal goal setting, individuals can chart their course of actions to reach their destination.

Goal Setting for Organizations
For organizations, achieving goals is a collective effort from all resources. Since, the organization is a complex organism, there can be multiple, divergent, and conflicting goals. Also, personal goals of employees may not be in line with organizational goals. Hence organizational goal setting becomes a crucial aspect of strategic management.

Goal setting is by no means an easy task. It requires careful consideration of the ambition levels, the external factors, and the feasibility of the project. However, goal setting can be accomplished with a well formulated action plan. If you follow the basics of goal setting, any reasonable goal becomes achievable.
