High depression: employees resort to counseling
Bangalore: As the fear of losing jobs due to the cost cutting exercises by firms has become a major cause for depression among employees in India, most of them are increasingly running to counseling centers to get rid of frustrations and pressures, reported The Times of India.
"Job losses often look like the end of the road for many youngsters. They instantly feel devastated, dejected and depressed. The number of people who come to us for job loss related counseling is on the rise. Being flexible and having the ability to adapt to change helps a lot," said Robert D`Roza, Professional counselor, Hope Ministries.
In the ground of unavoidable hiring freeze, down-sizing or promotion staggering, many companies are now demanding innovative counseling material for their employees.
"We are seeing a 40 percent increase in job-loss related cases. Both companies and independent employees are approaching us," said Dr Jane Henry, operations manager for India at PPC Worldwide, a provider of advanced employee assistance programs.
"There`s a lot of uncertainty at the workplace. The flexibility and bargaining ability of employees have vanished. There is huge financial stress. All these are creating a lot of psychological trauma," he added.
With an increase in layoffs and related issues in India, the concept of career transition program is beginning to catch on. Nobby Nazareth, CMD of Leader Prospects India, a career transition firm, started the initiative with the idea of targeting IT/ITeS companies. "But surprisingly, we got a lot of response from the airlines, hotel and pharmaceutical industries. And even from the manufacturing industry," he says.
