I would advice b-school grads to keep away from financial institutions. They should try for jobs in industries like hospitality, insurance, manufacturing, infrastructure and even HR. Government or NGOs jobs also hold good opportunities. The slowdown is a phase which will end. We will have to curtail our expectations till it passes.
Do you think there will be salary rationalisation?
Unfortunately today, salaries have turned into bidding prices. The placement committees and recruiters lure students only with money. Where is the emphasis on work and learning?. The focus should be on placements for quality job profiles and not astronomical salaries.
How should the HR professionals deal with staff cuts?
The fracas created by retrenched personnel from Jet Airways could have been avoided if the HR department would have handled it effectively. Instead of mass job cuts, the employees could have been given other options. The management could have negotiated reduction in salaries, change of profiles or transfers to a sister industry with the staff.
