Change your attitude and jumpstart your results

Success in sales is more a result of attitude than skill, so if you`re struggling to win business your mindset could be what you need to work on, says sales coach Kirsty Spraggon.

"Everything starts with the way you think," she says. "Your mind literally is `the brains` of your business: it decides whether or not you want to do something, controls what your attitude to any given situation is and either feeds or drains your motivation."

Whether you`re a recruiter operating within a corporate structure or a solo entrepreneur, you must invest time and effort into having the right attitude because it has a massive impact on your productivity and sales figures, she says in her book, Work as if you own it: How to unlock the door to unlimited success in commission sales.

Your choice is to either overcome barriers and push through your limiting self-beliefs, or become paralysed by them, she says.

She recommends maintaining a healthy attitude of positivity and enthusiasm, which includes smiling on the phone.

"Think about it: what client in their right mind would choose to deal with someone moody, unreliable or under confident when they could engage a more uplifting person who is a joy to work with?

"Do whatever you need to do to recall to mind the excitement, enthusiasm and vitality you felt in the beginning of your career and maintain that sense of curiosity and newness. Think of it like making the effort to spice up your marriage after being with the same person for 25 years."

Surround yourself with the right people

It`s not just your own beliefs that can help or hinder you, Spraggon notes.

Even if you believe that you are going to be the number one sales person in your company within 12 months, sometimes other top performers - speaking from their own experience - will tell you to expect that it will take three times that long, she says.

"The thing to remember is that however qualified someone is to give you advice, it is only their experience and their perception of what`s real. Not yours. The trick is to recognise that what they`re sharing with you is only their belief and not the truth.

"Confusing the two is an easy mistake to make but it can cost you dearly: by taking on the beliefs of others as if they are truths it creates beliefs in you from which you create your own reality... and before you know it what they told you has become true for you, but not for the reasons you may think."

Surrounding yourself with the right people is vital to ensuring you`re influenced in positive ways, Spraggon says.

"It is really important to be vigilant about the calibre of people you hang out with. Take a stand for your success. People with a positive `can-do` attitude and belief system are a joy to be around. They raise you up. Try to actually be one of these people, not just surround yourself with them. It`s so much more likely to accelerate your success than joining the `pity party` with negative colleagues or friends."

Break down belief barriers

Telling yourself that "the market is terrible", "everyone is struggling to get business", or "nobody wants to hire people at the moment" often just disguises the negative beliefs you have about your abilities and your fear of failure, Spraggon says.

It`s important to take time every day to become aware of your negative thoughts and identify the underlying self-beliefs, she says, as most can be countered by debating the negative thought with yourself in your head.

"It may sound crazy but argue your side against it and build your case with logical and rational thinking."

"Trick" yourself into succeeding

One of the most effective antidotes to unwanted beliefs is "trickery", Spraggon points out.

"Studies have shown our subconscious mind doesn`t know the difference between what`s real and what`s not... This means that you can literally trick your mind into believing whatever you want it to.

"It means you can start visualising your success and using affirmations to trick your mind into believing that whatever you want to be true actually already is."

Use your imagination to visualise scenarios that you want to bring about in real life and create a mental image of your desire - see, feel, hear, taste and smell it as if you are already experiencing it. Doing so strengthens your "positive belief muscles", Spraggon says.

Positive affirmations are brief, present-tense statements beginning with "I am" or "I have" read aloud and repeated regularly (e.g. at night before going to sleep or first thing in the morning when you wake up). Tell yourself, for example, "I am brilliant, successful and intelligent"; and "money is being printed for me right now"; and "every day my client relationships get stronger".

"Affirmations are effective ways to positively influence your self-talk and beliefs in order to trick your mind into believing these to be absolutely true," she says. ....
