Are you average, or successful?

12 February 2009:
Tougher market conditions make for an "exciting" time because they highlight the difference between average and successful recruiters, trainer Gaynor Lowndes says.

"Average people are trying to survive whereas successful people are looking for opportunities," she says.

Lowndes, principal of The Recruitment Training Company, recommends seven things you can do to leave the average behind:

1. Set huge goals. These should aim to bring the most amount of passion and joy into your life, and need to be set in the context of your values.

Average performers, she says, "don`t set goals, or they set goals that are easily achievable so that they never have to stretch themselves".

2. Ask for help. "All successful people have had mentors or coaches who have helped them succeed. Ask yourself: `Who can help me learn what I need to know? Who can I engage to help me stay motivated?` People want to provide help, so ask for it.

"If you`re not networking then you`re not working. Successful people build networks and work their relationships."

3. Get rid of limiting beliefs. "Ask yourself, `what is stopping me becoming a top performer?` Maybe you have associated success with hard work; or maybe you have associated sales with unethical and unprofessional people?

"Limiting beliefs will ensure you never achieve your goals."

4. Take immediate action. "Actions create results. Average people know what to do; they are just not doing it. Why? Because they don`t feel like it.

"Get out of your comfort zone - you can`t get a different result doing the same thing you have always done."

5. Be persistent. "Keep putting one foot in front of another on the path to reaching your goal. Nothing great was ever achieved overnight and all successful people will have a story about what happened before they achieved great success.

"Fortune is definitely in the follow through. Average performers quit before they succeed. Do you?"

6. Test and measure. "Are the actions you are taking moving you closer to your goal or further away?"

7. Create your own reality. "You are in charge of how you react to situations. Are you a victim or are you an opportunist?

"Average recruiters are sitting around moaning about the downturn. Successful recruiters are busy looking for opportunities."
